EDWARDSBURG - Stephen A. Salay, 84 years old, of Edwardsburg, MI, passed to his
rest on Sunday, November 23, 2008, at his home after an illness. He was born August
7, 1924, in South Bend, IN, the son of Nicholas Szalay and Mary Fodroczi. He was the
last living child of 11 children. Stephen was a cost accountant, having worked for
Studebaker and Curtis Wright in South Bend and at C.G. Conn of Elkhart. He moved to
Warsaw, where he worked for Korth and Bertsch Vending. Later, he moved to
Edwardsburg, 22 years ago. He was married October 9, 1954, in South Bend, at St.
Patrick's Church, where he married Joan M. Sullivan, who survives. Other survivors
are their children, Jennifer Marie (Monty) Bolinger of Noblesville, IN, Laura Lynn
(Harry) Zappala and Ami Frances (Daniel) McBrider, both of West Lafayette, IN, and
Stephen Douglas (Michelle) Salay of Mishawaka. He has 10 loving grandchildren, many
nieces and nephews. He was a devout husband and loving father and grandfather. He
loved Notre Dame, and 'couldn't believe that they lost to Syracuse.' He served in the
U.S. Navy during WWII and was a Yeoman 2/c. He served in the Pacific during the
War. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at noon in Our Lady of the Lake
Catholic Church, 24832 US-12 East, Edwardsburg, where the Mass will be done by
Father Joseph McCormick. Friends may call in the church for one hour before the Mass.
Burial will follow at Adamsville Cemetery, with the United States Navy Honor Guard
will play Taps and Fold the Flag. Arrangements are by Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home,
