William B. Tanner was a multimillionaire businessman. He got his start peddling radio jingles and swapping the jingles for radio air time which he sold to advertisers. From these humble beginnings he built a media company that sold almost $40 million in 1982 then bought controlling interest in a former United American Bank. He served two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to mail fraud and tax violations and was under indictment on charges of bribing a judge for a favorable ruling in a lawsuit. He died of cancer in Memphis, Tennessee on December 1, 2005.
