In 1867 he purchased 1/4 interest in Christopher Latham Sholes invention, and became the leader in promoting & manufacturing it.

He co-founded, with his brothers, the "Densmore Typewriter Company.

He was a famous inventor himself, co-creating the first railway tank-car for shipping petroleum. (U.S. Patents 53794 on April 10, 1866; 55830, 55831, & 55832 on June 26, 1866 for an "Improved Car for Transporting Petroleum")

He was the step-father of another famous inventor, Walter Jay Barron, who is buried in the same lot.
