COLORADO SPRINGS-Helen E. Gleason, 77, died Monday, October 20, 2003, in a Colorado hospital.

Services were Thursday in Colorado with burial in Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

Mrs. Gleason was a native of Canton, Ga. She had devoted her life to service for her fellow man and country. As her first job, she was employed as a courier escort for Larry Bell of Bell Aircraft Industries in Marietta. She went on to sell war bonds with actress Jane Withers in Atlanta. She entered the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps and received her training at Mount St. Agnes College in Baltimore, Md. She served her internship in psychiatry at the Seaton Hospital in Washington, D.C. and went to serve her internship in pediatrics at the Henrietta Egleston Hospital in Atlanta. She returned to St. Joseph Infirmary in Atlanta where she graduated. She was a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Response Team and served in Acute Polio Epidemics in Minnesota. She lived in Japan with her husband, Col. Leonard E. Gleason, while he served 2 tours in the U.S. Air Force. She went onto serve the U,S. Military in the Air Evac System, she was a honorary alumni of the St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah. Before her retirement she served as director of the Pikes Peake Nursing Facility for several years. She was the daughter of the late Leonard and Ella "Paris' Dills.

Survivors include five daughters, Melanie Gleason, Carole Phelps, Cynthia Kurtz, Suzanne Almeida and Jennifer Baker; a son, Christopher Gleason; a sister, Lois Watts of Milledgeville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family request expressions of sympathy be sent to St. Joseph Alumni Fund, Brenda Saxton, Director, 2263 Ga. Highway 77, Guyton, GA 31312.
