RUSSELL, Enos M.. Age 23. Residence Elkader, nativity Pennsylvania. Enlisted in Company D, 21st Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Aug. 14, 1862. Mustered Aug 22, 1862. Detailed as teamster. Wounded slightly in the head, captured and paroled Nov. 24, 1862, Beaver Creek, MO. Granted a medical furlough August 1863, registered for the draft of 1863, returned to regiment through Camp Distribution, New Orleans, LA, November 1863. Regimental Hospital from Nov. 28, 1864, Intermittent Fever, until admitted Overton General Hospital, Memphis, TN, Jan. 1, 1865, Quartan Intermittent Fever, returned to duty April 28, 1865. Drunk and resisting arrest, shot by provost guard in right breast, died from wound April 28, 1865, Memphis. TN, buried Section A, Grave 1718, Memphis National Cemetery.

From pension records on file with the National Archives: Enos was survived by his wife (Julia) and a three-year-old son. She married William L. Smith in Freeborn, Minnesota, and, after his death on January 8, 1880, applied for a widow's pension based on Enos' service. Due to the circumstances of his death without a discharge, a pension was denied.
