Alfred "Al" Hill, 84, of Toulon, Il., and formerly of Kewanee died at 3:20 P.M. Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at his home. He was born June 20, 1924 in Kewanee the son of George and Jessie (Howel) Hill originally from Sheffield, England. Al graduated from Kewanee High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre from 1943-1946.
Al loved people and politics. He owned and operated several local businesses. The Catalpa Grove in Toulon, Al Hill's Grocery in Kewanee for 23 years and Happy Joes Pizza in Kewanee for 20 years. In later years he worked at Black Hawk East Jr. College. Al was the mayor of Kewanee from 1983-1987 and mayor of Toulon from 2001-2005 and was currently a Toulon Councilman. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Lions, Masons, American Legion, VFW and active in the Democratic Party.
Surviving is one daughter Marianna (Ed) Lewis of Estes Park, Colorado, four grandchildren Jessica (Aaron) Smith, Captain Al Lewis U.S. Air Force, Missy Lewis and Cora (Levi) Belo, one brother Henry (Teresa) Hill of Kewanee, numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his life partner Judy Gould of Toulon and her family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers James, George, Harold "Lefty", Fred and Edward and two sisters Lily Murphy and Edna Wilson.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 29, 2008 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Jerry Rafalko will officiate. Burial will be in the Toulon Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. Friday, November 28, 2008 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Leukemia Foundation.
