West Virginia Governor. He held the distinction of being both West Virginia's youngest and oldest governor. In 1956, he was elected as a Republican, the 25th Governor of West Virginia serving until 1961. 40 years later in 1996, he was elected again as the 35th Governor of West Virginia, serving until 2001. Prior to his two governorships, he served in the West Virginia House of Delegates from 1944 to 1956. After his death his body was donated to the Marshall University Medical School in Huntington, West Virginia, at his request. There is a cenotaph for Underwood.
