Mary Tuffley was the only daughter of John Tuffley and Joan (Rawlins) Tuffley. Her father was a cooper. When she was 20 years old she married Daniel Defoe who was a hosiery merchant early in life. They obtained their license on December 28, 1683, in London.

The grave of Daniel Defoe was opened on September 16, 1871 because school children of London had raised money to erect a monument over his grave. This was in response of his writing Robinson Caruso and other books.

It was found that two other coffins had been placed on top of his. His was identified by a brass plate. The other two coffins probably belonged to his wife who died one year and 8 months after him and a woman named Mrs. Deffoe who was buried on January 19, 1737 and is listed in Bunhill records. Her relationship to The Defoe family is not known.
