Elias Phelps, age 94 years, a pioneer resident of Harrison township, who had been bed-fast for the past five weeks, died Saturday evening at 7:30 o'clock. Death was due to diseases incident to old age. During the past few weeks, Mr. Phelps has suffered intensely, yet he bore his afflictions with that same patience and endurance that was characteristic of him all through life. Mr. Phelps made a remarkable fight against the Grim Reaper and the perseverance with which he fought off death showed him to be a man of wonderful vitality. Mr. Phelps is survived by one son, John Phelps, of this city.
The funeral will occur Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Clear Spring church, Rev. Morton Pearson of Indianapolis will have charge of the services. Interment will be made at the same place.
Born In North Carolina.
Elias Phelps was born in or near Greensboro, N. C., August 30, 1819. At the age of ten years, he came with his parents to the then wilderness of Henry county, and was cared for by them until about twenty years of age, when he began to work for himself, hiring out to the farmers of the neighborhood, and assisting in clearing and cultivating the land.
He was joined in marriage to Anna Hill, of Rush county, Dec. 2, 1847, and went to housekeeping on a rented farm, where they remained four years, when Mr. Phelps bought an eighty acre tract in the southeast corner of Harrison township, his holdings increasing to 243 acres as the years came and went.
Had Five Children.
There they established the home where their five children were born, grew to manhood and womanhood and went forth, all happily mated to establish homes of their own, but never forgetting the ofttimes returning to pay homage to the parents who had taught them the virtue of living right.
There, July 28, 1909, the greatest sorrow of his life came to Mr. Phelps when the Angel of Death claimed his wife, faithful companion and helper for sixty-two years of his life. He met the bereavement with fortitude and cheerful resignation, and lived on in blissful hope that when life's journey is ended and he is called to receive the reward of the years spent in the service of his Master, she will bid him welcome to the other shore.
A Birthright Friend.
Mr. Phelps had a birthright in the Society of Friends, both of his parents being members of the religious denomination. He accepted the inheritance and has continued an active and influential adherent, ever ready to contribute from his means, by the labor of his hands and word of mouth as an exhorter among his people to spread the gospel among men.
Throughout his whole life, he had been active in public affairs. As an ardent Republican, since the organization of the party, he was earnest in the defense of its doctrines. He was thrice honored by election as a county commissioner, covering a period of nine years, through which he rendered services which marked him as a man of strict integrity and intelligent judgement. He was a member of the board when the present court house was erected.
Event Was Celebrated.
Two years ago, on Mr. Phelps' 92nd birthday anniversary, his children, grandchildren, relatives and friends innumerable, assembled at Mount Lawn park, and joined in heartily congratulating him on the length of years to which he has been spared and to wish him continuation of health and strength and years on earth.
The celebration of the auspicious event was planned as a surprise to Mr. Phelps and worked out as the promoters wished. Mr. Phelps was surprised but neither disconcerted nor displeased, and enjoyed the occasion.
