Melvin K. Abbott , 80, of 4163 Tanner Road, Onondaga, died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital after a short illness. He was a life-long resident of South Onondaga. He was a salesman and territory manager for the Universal Milking Machine Co. (Agway), retiring in 1972 after 35 years of service. Mr. Abbott was an active partner with Abbodale Farms and winner of the Silver Cow Award given annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to the dairy industry. Mr. Abbott was a member of the Onondaga Central School Board for 27 years serving as president for two years and vice president for 15 years and was an honorary member of the New York State Parent-Teachers Organization.
He was a charter member of the South Onondaga Fire Volunteer Department and a 43-year member of Morning Star Lodge 524 F&AM. He was a member of the South Onondaga United Methodist Church and a former trustee of the church. He was a member of the South Onondaga Grange 830, the town of Onondaga Chamber of Commerce, Onondaga Farm Extension and Onondaga Farm Bureau and a member of the committee for June Dairy Month. He was a member of the New York State and Finger Lakes Sanitarian Association.
Mr. Abbott was active in sports for youth and had coached several South Onondaga Basketball teams. He is survived by his wife, the former Daisy Taylor. The Abbotts had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year.
Also surviving are a son, Harold M. Abbott of Syracuse; three daughters, Helen A. Fisher and Thelma A. Mead, both of Syracuse, and Cheryl L. Charboneau of Rochester; a sister, Genevieve Abbott of South Onondaga; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at South Onondaga United Methodist Church. Burial will be in South Onondaga Cemetery.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Norris Funeral Home, 33 North St., Marcellus. Contributions may be made to the athletic department of Onondaga Central School, or to the South Onondaga United Methodist Church.
