Company president, 84
L. Charles Biehl, 84, of Norristown, a retired company president and community activist, died of a subdural hematoma Sunday at the Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Norristown, Mr. Biehl began working for Gey Band & Tag Co. in Norristown as a teenager in 1935. He eventually became a partner and president of the company, which had a construction and paving division, and owned the Penn Square Swim Club in East Norriton Township.
The company's specialty though, his son L. Charles Jr. said, was making identification tags for wildlife and domestic animals, including ear tags for cows and bands for racing pigeons and penguins in the Antarctic. He retired in 1987.
Active in politics and the community, Mr. Biehl was a Republican committeeman and in the 1960s and 1970s he served on the Norristown Area School Board, of which he was a former president.
He was also a former president of the board of the Central Montgomery County Vocational Technical School and had been president of the Lions Club in Norristown. He also had served on the advisory board of the Salvation Army in Norristown.
Mr. Biehl was a 32d-degree Mason and a life member of the Norris Hose Company and the Norriton Engine Company.
A graduate of Norristown High School, he had attended the University of Pennsylvania.
His son said his father enjoyed collecting stamps and coins and taking road trips in his recreational vehicle with his wife, Francis Dunlap Biehl.
In addition to his wife of 57 years and his son, he is survived by another son, Jeffrey; two brothers; a sister; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Bailey Funeral Chapel, 815 W. Marshall St., Norristown. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery , Norristown.
