OBITUARY:
The Spirit Lake Beacon 15 Nov 1917—E. L. Owen Passed Away Monday—Died At The Home Of His Daughter At Harris Buried Here

E. L Owen died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Wellemeyer at Harris on Monday. Mr. Owen has been steadily growing feebler until taken to his bed. The remains were brought to Spirit Lake Tuesday morning, the funeral being held at the M E church. Rev. S. H. Turbeville officiated assisted by Rev. O.P. Muller of Harris and Rev. Arrasmith of Storm Lake. Interment was made in Lakeview Cemetery.

Ephraim Litle Owen was born in Henry county, Tennessee, on January 22, 1828. He would have been ninety years of age at his next birthday. On March 18, 1852 he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Good at Carlinsville, Illinois. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom are living, two sons having died in infancy. Those who are called upon to mourn the death of their father are: Mrs. C. H. Wylder, Mrs. A. D. Moffatt and A. M. Owen of Spokane, Washington; Mrs. J. F Imus, Snowhomish, Washington; Mrs. L. M. Bickal of Dawson, Iowa, and Mrs. Addie Owen-Johnson and Mrs. G. L. Wellemeyer of Harris, Iowa. Besides his children he leaves twenty-six grand children, thirty great grand children and three great great grand children, also one sister Mrs. Mary Harrington of Litchfield, Illinois.

The subject of this sketch was on of the men who left his family at the call of his country at the time of the Civil War. He enlisted as a volunteer in Co A 122 Regiment of Illinois Infantry on August 9, 1862 and followed the flag in the fortunes of war until his honorable discharge on July 15, 1865. The records show that he took part in the following notable engagements: Parkers Cross Roads, Tennessee, December 31, 1862; Town Creek, Alabama, April 28, 1863; Lupelo, Mississippi, July 14, 1934; Nashville, Tennessee, December 15 and 16 1864 and the siege and capture of Fort Blakely, Alabama, April 9, 1865.

Following the war he resided in Illinois until 1884; when he moved his family to Bingham Lake, Minnesota. After making his home at that place for four years he moved to Spirit Lake, where he resided until the death of Mrs. Owen in August 11, 1916, after which he moved to Harris to reside with his daughter. Mr. Owen was a carpenter and contractor by trade and followed that profession until a number of years after he moved to Spirit Lake.

In religion he early developed the habit of weighing things in the balance of reason and while not a member of any church, yet he saw the need and was interested in church and the cause it represented. He not only gave for its support, but could always be considered a regular attendant. He was a good citizen, faithful husband and a loving father, and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.
