Funny and sweet, sensitive and outgoing, Dylan Almaden was anything but average, his parents said Tuesday.
Their only child, 3½-year-old Dylan, was found drowned in a pond less than 40 yards from his Bishop Road home in Joyce on Sunday.
"He was the best kid," said his dad, Donald Adam Almaden, who goes by the name of Adam.
"I know every parent probably thinks that, but he was pretty special.
"He had such a personality."
Helen Almaden said her son was intelligent, tough, comforting and sensitive — a special happy kid.
"He was a free spirit," she said.
"He loved cooking, and did everything that guys do — all the 'guy' stuff — but he'd also do all the stuff that girls do."
He was also empathetic — even comforting his mother when she was down, she added.
On the day of his death, Dylan was next door to his home, visiting his grandparents, Jerry and Shirley Almaden, with his dad.
The pond is between the two back yards.
Dylan drove his battery operated toy car toward his house where his mother was, his father said.
Adam peeked around the corner and saw the toy car parked near the house, so he thought Dylan was with his mother.
A few minutes later, he went home to check on him and found that he wasn't in the house.
Adam's first thought was to check the pond.
"It is always something we worried about with him," he said.
But he found nothing there.
Adam called for the help of neighbors and the Clallam County Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue team at about 5:20 p.m.
Six hours later, the boy's body was discovered under what had been about 10 feet of water when searchers drained the pond.
"He was such a vocal kid that I'm not sure why none of us would have heard him," Helen said, "because I know he would have called out."
About 75 people searched for the boy, Clallam County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Lyman Moores said.
"We are so grateful to the people who came out and tried to help," Adam said.
Said Jerry, "It just goes to show the Joyce community spirit."
Services: Saturday, March 8, 1 p.m., funeral in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles, with the Rev. Jonathan Simonson officiating.
A second service, "Dylan's Concert," will be held Saturday, March 15, at 3 p.m. in Olympic Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 3415 Peabody St., Port Angeles.
