Half-brother to famous Old West lawmen Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan Earp. Newton was the son of 'Earp patriarch' Nicholas Earp and his first wife Abigail Storm. His mother died in 1839, the day after his 2nd birthday. His father remarried the following year to Virginia Cooksey. Their union produced sons James, Virgil, Wyatt, Morgan and Warren Earp. Newton was close to the older half-siblings and in fact would later name two of his sons (James and Wyatt) after his brothers. Newton enlisted in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War along with his brothers James and Virgil. He served in CO F of the 4th Cavalry, Iowa Volunteers, rising to the rank of CPL and mustering out after the war ended in 1865. He married Nancy Jane Adam (known as Jennie); they were parents of Effie May, Wyatt Clyde, Mary Elizabeth, Alice Abigail and Virgil Edwin. Newton and his family moved to Southern California for while where many of the Earp clan had relocated. He worked for while as a saloon manager, but later moved back to the mid west where he farmed and raised his children. Years later he returned to California where he worked in northern California as a carpenter and home builder for a number of years. He suffered a terrible loss when his wife Jennie died, March 29, 1898, in Paradise Hill, Nevada. Newton Earp lived another 30 years after that, passing away in Sacramento, California.
