Dr. Joseph H. Forbes was the grandson of a War of 1812 solider: James Forbes. His great-grandfather was of Scotch/Dutch descent and served in the Revolutionary War.
Dr. Forbes was educated at a private school in Barren County, Kentucky. On July 22, 1857, he married Elizabeth Woodside.(She was the daughter of John and Emily H. Woodside). The couple married in Thomasville (Oregon County), Missouri. Emily died in 1861, leaving the doctor with two small children: Leigh and Alice Forbes. The doctor later married again; this time to a Eliza A. Andrews(the daughter of John and Matilda Andrews). Eliza and Joseph had 14 children. in 1889 the following children were still living: Lee W. Forbes(married Elizabeth Looman);
Sarah Alice Forbes-Marrow(Married Dr. U. Marrow);
William J. Forbes(married Julia Graves);
Clemming Forbes-Casey(married Thomas E. Casey of Hunt County, Texas);
Molly Forbes-Welch(married J. C Welch of Hackett City, Arkansas;
Emma Forbes
Ida Forbes,
George Forbes,
Daisy, Forbes
and Joseph Forbes.
Dr. Forbes was a Masonic Mason.
His wife: Eliza, died in 1897 and the good doctor is buried alongside his wife at Vinita Cemetery, that is located just west of Hackett, Arkansas.

In 1863, he began to practice medicine in Oregon County, Missouri. Then in 1871, he set up his medical practice in Hackett City(now know only as Hackett), Arkansas. Later, in 1877, Dr. Forbes opened up a drug store for the citizens of the area. He operated this store until 1885, when he sold it to his sons.
Besides his medical practice and drug store, Dr. Forbes opened up a dry goods store in 1880, but after 1885, he devoted all his attention to the practice of medicine.
