March 28, 1911 - Carroll Sentinel - J.P. Hess and Frank Berger went to Omaha Thursday evening to accompany the body of Jos. Nurre to Carroll.

Joseph Nurre, one of the large land holders and financiers of this city died in Eugene, Oregon, on Sunday, March 19 and the remains were laid to rest in the church cemetery in this city Friday morning, Father Kuemper performing the last sad rites. The funeral was one of the most largely attended that has been held in this city for some time. There were many present from outside the city. About fifty of his former friends and associates from Schaller, his old home, were among those present to pay their last tribute to one they held in such high esteem. The cause of the deceased's death as the result of an operation performed a few days previous at the hospital in Eugene, Oregon. Last November he left here and went there spend the winter in his suburban home with his wife and daughters and is son-in-law, Frank Berger.

He enjoyed excellent health until a week prior to his death. He was attacked with obstruction of the bowels and that day was taken to the hospital. The next day he was operated on by an eminent surgeon, Dr. McKenzie of Portland, Oregon. He rallied nicely and was thought to be on the way to speedy recovery until the following Saturday evening when alarming symptoms developed. He continued to fail rapidly until about 5 p.m. the next day when he died.

Joseph Nurre was born in Oldemburg, Germany, February, 1851, and was 60 years old at the time of his death. He came to America when a small boy with his parents. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Finke of Montour, Clinton county, Iowa in 1875. Four years later they moved to near Schaller, Sac county and settled on a farm where they remained until 1894, when they moved to this city and have since made this their home.

To this union there were born four children, two boys and two girls, all of whom are living and are: Mrs. Mary Berger of Eugene, Oregon; J.J. Nurre of Neola; Henry Nurre of Lake View and Miss Lizzie who makes her home with her mother. Mrs. Nurre and all the children were presnt at the funeral.

Joseph Nurre was a self made man and by his ability succeeded in amasing a large fortune variously estimted at from a quarter to half a million dollars. About thirty years ago he located in Sac county on a quarter section of land and followed farming until he moved to this city when he engaged in the hardware business with his son-in-law. During these years he put all the money he could get in land. Having recieved some assistance from his parents, enabled him to make investments that proved profitable beyond his greatest expectations.

At the time of his death he held some thing like three thousand acres of land. This was all purchased for a few dollars per acre but is very valuable at this time. By his good business ability and wise investments he accumulated a vast fortune. His death will remove one of the active financiers from our community and a man who by his manly upright character was highly honored and respected. The bereaved wife and children have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow.
