Rev. Mary Eliza "Jennie" (Fowler) Willing was the daughter of Horatio and Harriet (Ryan) Fowler. She was the granddaughter of Rev. Henry Ryan, who organized the Canadian Wesleyan Methodist Church. She was the sister of Rev. Bishop Charles Henry Fowler who was President of Northwestern University and in 1884 was elected a Bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was the wife of Rev. Dr. William C. Willing. They were married October 25, 1853 when Jennie was nineteen years old. They had been married 41 years at the time of his death. He was a minister in the Genesee (now Western New York) Conference and Rock River Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
She was a Public School Teacher, licensed METHODIST EPISCOPAL LOCAL PREACHER, Evangelist, Temperance Reformer (Woman's Christian Temperance Union), Founder of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1st General Organizer of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Founder and Principal of the New York Evangelical Settlement House and Training School.
"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female, for ye are all one in Christ Jesus." When the Christian Church cuts down through the gloss and prejudice to the core of the meaning of that utterance we may look for the millenium."
