Hazel Jane James Call 90, longtime Afton resident, died at her home in Afton Sunday, April 3, 1983 after a long illness.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 8, at 1 p.m. in the Afton First LDS Ward Chapel with Bp. Kay L. Robinson conducting. Interment was in the Afton Cemetery.
She was born Oct. 13, 1892 at Paradise, Utah to David Jenkins and Fanny Webb James, the ninth child in a family of 12, The large family enjoyed a close relationship especially among the nine sisters. Hazel attended grade school at Paradise Utah and because the nearest high school was at Logan, she attended the Brigham Young Academy there.
Upon graduating she started teaching school in the elementary grades, sometimes having first to eighth grades and many years having all the grades in one classroom. she taught three years in Malad, Idaho, three years at Rexburg, Idaho and one year at Etna, and one year as principal of the Ellis School at Logan.
Hazel met Truman V. Call of Afton about three days before she finished teaching at Etna. They were married June 12, 1918 in the Logan LDS Temple. nearly every year for many years they were in attendance at that temple on their wedding anniversary. They lived most of their married life in Afton.
Hazel was one of the first victims of the dreaded 1918 flu epidemic in Star Valley. After she finally recovered she nursed other people to health.
Hazel was active in many organizations, both church and community. She was active in the LDS Relief Society for 63 years. she was an organist or chorister fro 34 years. She was a charter member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Music was one of Hazel's greatest pleasures. She sang in the Canto Chorus for 34 years at numerous functions., including most of the farewells for boys leaving for military service during Would War II. Hazel was proud that she had one son, James and 27 nephews who served during Would War Ii.She helped to instill the love for music in her children and grandchildren.
Hazel served as superintendent of the 4-H Club exhibits at the Lincoln County fair for 24 years. In recognition of this and other service she received the Quealy Award, given every four years to the outstanding home economist in the state of Wyoming. The gold pin she received was one of her most cherished possessions. She and Mrs. Nellie Roberts each received a certificate for selling the most Liberty Bonds in Star valley during World War II.
She is survived by her husband Truman V, Call, Afton; a daughter, June C. Larson, Brigham City Utah; a son, James T. Call Chicago Ill.; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
