Elder Vachel D. Whatley was ordained in Beulah Primitive Baptist Church in 1853 and served the church until his death in 1866. He was buried in Whatley Family Cemetery.
Quoted from FAMILY CEMETERIES, by Webb, p. 150:
{Whatley Cemetery} Land Lot 74 of 15th Militia District off State Route 109 (Roanoke Road) near Antioch community. A slave cemetery on right, at one time ninety graves counted, marked with field stone. (The first grave in this cemetery is that of Archie Whatley's great-grandfather, who gave the land for the cemetery. When land was cleared, he found a wild turkey nest under a poplar tree. He did not cut the tree nor clear around it. The tree is still standing outside the fenced cemetery, and is about fifteen feet in circumference.
