Daughter of Penelope Pope Allen, an early St. Louis society leader and mother of Christine Orrick Fordyce, charter member of the Woman's Suffrage Association of Missouri. Although they did not meet success until 1919, the women of Missouri made their voices heard, and as a result Missouri had some of the most liberal laws for women of any state in 1899. Penelope made her plea when the State Legislature was petitioned for the vote in 1882. Sadly, she died in 1915, before the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified.
