U.S. Congressman. Graduating from Baylor University, he studied law at Southern Methodist University, was admitted to the bar in 1968 and was a lawyer in private practice in Dallas, Texas. He was assistant district attorney of Dallas County (1968-70) and a member of the Texas State House of Representatives (1973-77). In 1977, he was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fifth Congress and to the next two succeeding Congresses, serving until 1983. Not candidate for reelection, he was elected Texas State Attorney General, serving 1983-91. After leaving the attorney general's office, he devoted his time to his family, law practice and real estate development until his death.
