Elizabeth Gay is the daughter of Captain William Gay, Jr. (abt 1731-1815) and Frances Trent (1753-1780) and second wife of Col. Efford Bentley (1759-1837). She is also a direct descendant of Pocahontas.

Obituary: Departed this life at the residence of her son Mr. John G(ay) Bentley of Madison Co. on the 28th day of June1840 in the 67th year of her age, Mrs. Elizabeth Bentley, relict of Col. Efford Bentley, formerly of Cumberland Co., VA. Descended from a large and very respectable family in VA......united herself to the Presbyterian church in Cumberland Co. some 30 years since. The Richmond papers will please insert the above notice.

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 14, page 299

Efford Bentley, (1759-1837), served as a minute man and gave three tours of duty, 1777-80. He was sergeant at the battles of Camden and Petersburg. He was a pensioner when he died in Madison county, Alabama.
