Hiram R. Groves, of Lebanon, passed away at his home Tuesday evening, September 13th , 2005 at the age of 103.

He was born on the family farm on April 22, 1902 in Bosworth, Missouri to Jonas and Margaret (Sylvester) Groves. His family moved to Lebanon when he was ten years and he lived there nearly all of his life.

After graduating from Lebanon High School he attended Oregon Agricultural College, now Oregon State University, where he studied pharmacy. Following his college graduation in 1924, he moved to Portland where he worked as a pharmacist.

On December 26th, 1925 he married Eleanor Everett of Lebanon, whose father had been a partner in the Everett, Kyle, and Epperly Hardware Store, located at the corner of Grant and Main Street. When his mother-in-law became ill, Hiram and Eleanor moved back to Lebanon to help out with the store, intending to stay for only a short time and to eventually return to the practice of pharmacy. However, forty-nine years later, at the age of 75, Hiram retired from the hardware business, which was by then called Groves Hardware and which was still in the same location on Main Street.

Hiram was a charter member of the Lebanon Elks Lodge. He was honored by the Lebanon Masonic Lodge on the occasion of his 100th birthday in 2002 and by his church, the Lebanon First Presbyterian Church where he had served as a Trustee. He was a member of the Hillah Shrine. He had previously been active for many years in the Lebanon Lions Club and he worked tirelessly in the campaign to finance and construct what is now the Lebanon Community Hospital. He had served on the Lebanon School Board and had been a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Lebanon, which later became Citizens Valley Bank. For many years he served on the Strawberry Festival Board of Directors, and he was an active member of the Commercial Club, which later became the Chamber of Commerce.

Hiram loved to work with the soil and had annually tilled and planted his garden until he was past the age of 102. His dahlias, rose bushes, and numerous vegetables were his pride and joy. He also owned a farm by the South Santiam River. He had been an avid fisherman and was instrumental in forming the Santiam Fish and Game Commission.

Hiram's wife Eleanor passed away on July 8, 1982. He married Sue Sommers in 1985, she also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his daughters: Eloise Phalen of Woodacre, California, Dory Browning and son-in-law Daniel of Albany, and Mardee Palmer and son-in-law Alan of Corvallis. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor; his brothers: Frank, Roshel, and Kenneth Groves; his sister: Zelma Groves Cardwell; and his son-in-law: Charles Phalen.

A memorial service will he held on Monday, September 26th at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Lebanon.

Contributions can be made to the Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Evergreen Hospice, or to the charity of choice in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, OR 97355.
