Jan 18, 1934 - Carroll Times - Joseph Skalla, 80 years old, for many years a resident of Carroll county, died at his home on the John Willey farm southeast of Carroll Saturday morning. Apoplexy is said to have been the cause of his death. He was ill only a few days, and was engaged in moving to Carroll when he became ill.
Mr. Skalla was born in Austria and served in the army in his native land. When a young man he came to America with his father and brother and settled in Carroll county. He and Miss Magdalena Gute were united in marriage in 1890 and to this union eight children were born, three sons and five daughters.
He is survived by his wife, children, and one brother, John Skalla of Portsmouth, IN. The children are: John Skalla and Mrs G.H. Busche of Halbur; Mrs Emil Wurr, Mrs Ed Heim, and Joseph Skalla of Auburn; Mrs Wolfe Wanninger of Manning; and Frank and Alice Skalla of Carroll.
Funeral services were held at the St. Mary's church in Willey Monday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Fr. M. A. Schemel.
