Married Amanda Margaret Hoyt Haught on February 7, 1856.
He is the father of three children; Margaret Ellen, Mary Elizabeth and John W. Cropp.
Described as being 6' 1/2" tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion, John Enlisted in the Union Army on August 12, 1862. He was mustered into Company B on August 18, 1862, and was mustered into the 21st Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry at Dubuque on September 9, 1862.
The regiment left for war on September 16, 1862.
On August 5, 1863, (almost 1 year later) he was granted a sick furlough to go home to recuperate, but died at his home on September 7, 1863. He died at home, age 26 years 3 ms. 15 ds.

On March 29, 1866, his widow Amanda married Franklin McMonigal and had eleven more children.
