Joseph went first to IN and later to IL. On November 9, 1835 he purchased 40 acres lying between the farm of his brother-in -law, William Miller, Sr. and the forty his father, William Hanks Sr. had purchased the same year. The next year, 1836, he purchased a forty-acre tract south of the eighty his brother Charles owned. At his death, records showed that Joseph owned 120 acres in what is now Harristown Township, Macon Co., IL. He also owned 120 acres in Pleasant Grove Township, Des Moines, IA. Joseph was a sergeant in Captain Isaac Pugh's Rangers in the Black Hawk War and re-enlisted in Captain Elijah Iles's Company.
