He was born Feb. 9, 1944, in Hart County, the son of the late Curtis Stone. He was a retired technician for Newton Mills, member of the Nancy Hart Masonic Lodge #690, Lake Hartwell Shrine Club and member and past commander of the Hartwell VFW Post. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his mother, Lillie Goldsmith Stone of Bowersville; his wife: Betty Herring Stone; two sons, Carey Benson Stone Jr. and Sherrie Stone of Canon and their daughter, Carrie Madison Stone; Greg and Jennifer Carnes of Hartwell and their children and grandchildren, Michelle and Lance Burns, Snow Eaton, Luke Carnes, Ava Carnes and Addison Burns; two daughters, Pam Carnes and her children and grandchildren, Christopher and Amanda Bowers, Carolyn and Eli McClain, Alex Bowers, Fiona Bowers and Katelyn McClain; Sharon and the Rev. Doug Brown of Lavonia and their children, Will Brown, Amanda Brown, Phillip Hawkins and Sam Brown; sisters, Shirley Bratcher and Betty Vaughn, both of Hartwell and Edna Stone of Bowersville.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Strickland Funeral Home - Hartwell Chapel with the Revs. Joe Black and Scott Mize, and Mr. Fred Greenway officiating. Burial followed in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park with Masonic Rites. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville SC, 29605.
