William was born in Memphis and lived there all of his life, until he was drafted into the US Army.
He began his Vietnam tour on 29 November, where he was assigned to the Army's 1st Cavalry Division, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, Company C.
The company was on a patrol when they were ambushed during Operation Nathan Hale, 6 kilometers southeast of the Dong Tre Specials Forces Camp. William died as a result of a gunshot wound to the back from hostile rifle fire. The company had a total 9 soldiers killed during the ambush.
Survived by his parents, Rufus and Augusta Henderson Dowdy of Lake Grove, TN.
