James Monroe Weldy was the son of George Walter Weldy and Jane Rouse Weldy. He was born in Washington County, Alabama on April 8, 1875.

He married Isabelle Charity Lewis, daughter of William Henry Lewis and Julia Ann Dees on December 29, 1897. They had five children: Mayme (m. Robert Smith), James Herman (m. Ethel Collins), Vera Bell (m. Luny Jackson Smith), Leottice (m. Sadie McWatters), and Willie Mae (married M.E. "Gene" Hugghins).

He worked in the railroad industry performing rail car repairs and lived in the Toulminville/Prichard district for over 45 years.

He died June 2, 1957 in Mobile County, Alabama and is buried next to his wife in the Whistler Cemetery- Therrell Annex.
