John M. Porter, 89, of Flora, retired railroad engineer and the last Spanish-American War veteran in Clay County, died Thursday morning at the Clay County Hospital.

Mr. Porter was well known in Richland county as he had often visited Olney at the IOOF Lodge. He was an active member of Flora IOOF Lodge for many years. He was a retired railroad engineer on the B&O branch road to Springfield.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Watts of Decatur, Mrs. Lowell Cord of St. Louis, Mo. and Mrs. George Myers of Belleville.

Funeral services at Cardascio-Hancock Funeral Home with burial at Flora. Military rites conferred at graveside.
