He died on the Mississippi River aboard the US Hospital Boat "R.C. Wood" en route from Chickasaw Bayou, MS to Memphis, TN.

James M. Capen was a Private in Company "F" of the 29th Wisconsin infantry during the Civil War. Enlisting from Concord, Jefferson County, Wisc., on August 21, 1862, on the same day as his brother (George A. Capen), James served with the regiment until falling ill and dying of disease on May 31, 1863, aboard the hospital ship R. C. Wood.
