He was a native of Norfolk, Va., (Berkley) and served as a member of the 79th
Infantry Division during World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart at
Luneville, France. He later retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 34 years
and was subsequently employed by the Tomato House. He was a member of the
Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, Lamberts Point Lodge (NU)99; Disabled
American Veterans, Norfolk Chapter (NU)4; and had served as deacon at Coleman
Place Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Womack Phelps; two sons, Edwin A. Phelps III
and his wife, Amy L. Phelps of Wexford, Pa., and Philip T. Phelps of Virginia
Beach; a daughter, Karen Anne Phelps of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Melvin L.
Phelps Sr. of Chesapeake and Bernard A. Phelps Sr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; two
sisters, Marian P. Parsons of Suffolk and Anne P. Sloope of Richmond; and two
grandchildren, Edwin A. Phelps IV and Eric J. Phelps of Wexford, Pa.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 18, in Coleman Place
Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Larry C. Miles. Burial will be in Riverside
Memorial Park, Norfolk. The family will be receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
Sunday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel. In lieu of flowers,
the family requests that memorial donations be made to Coleman Place
Presbyterian Church, 1513 E. Sewells Point Road, Norfolk, Va. 23502.
Those of us whose life he touched will forever cherish his ``outstanding''
