Born in Duplin County, North Carolina in 1844, eldest child of Kilby & Jane Octavia [Smith] Bass. Amos traveled with his parents and younger brother & sister to Washington County, Texas when he was 5 or 6 years old. Two more siblings were born there. His father died when he was 10 years old, and his mother when he was fifteen. After his parents death, Amos and his brother James lived with his mother's sister Ann Elizabeth [Smith] Cooper and her husband, Charles H. Cooper. The Coopers had children of about the same age. His three youngest siblings lived with their aunt Julia [Smith] Bowden and her husband, Henry. Henry Bowden served as their legal guardian and managed the property left by their mother. Amos married Laura Hocker in 1883. They had two sons, Amos, Jr. and Ralph.
