His mother was the second wife, Louie Dan Latimore Morrel. In the 1870 Nuxobee Mississippi Township 15 census she is listed as "Darnella" aged 7. I'm not sure if Louie was short for Louisa or not. She named Aunt Jo "Louie" also. According to the family she always called herself "Dan" and her marriage certificate names her "Louie Dan".
After my daughter joined the Marines and worked for JPAC (recovery of service men from all wars to bring home) and I knew that Truman had promised that every mother's son would come home, I found an article from the Mlford Press about him in which it was stated that he was in fact brought home by train along with other young men from the area.
