James A. Beaver was born on June 1, 1840 in Fulton County, Illinois and died on August 18, 1863 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. He was the son of Elias Beaver (1799-1865) and Naomi Wilson (1811-1886).

Note that a findagrave member contacted me and indicated his birth location as Fulton in Whiteside County, Illinois, but in a write-up on his mother Namoi (Wilson) Beaver, she indicated that after she married Elias Beaver in 1839, they remained in Fulton County, Illinois until 1852 when they moved to Iowa. From the records I have found, they never lived in Whiteside County so I question that as being the place James was born.

In 1850, James and his family were living in Fulton County, Illinois (per 1850 census). The 1856 Iowa, U.S., State Census Collection, 1836-1925 shows the family living in Clay Township in Marion County, Iowa as does the 1860 census.

On March 3, 1861 in Marion County, James married Rachel Ann Cecil (1840-1889) [Iowa Marriages, 1851-1900]. They had one daughter, Idella Louise 'Ida' born April 19, 1862 in Marion County.

Sadly, war came to America in the form of the Civil War and James was caught up in it. On August 10, 1862, he enlisted in Company A, 33rd Iowa Infantry as a Private and was in the Battle of Helena. James' mother Naomi mentioned his enlisted in a write-up done on her, but his enlistment is also confirmed in the record U.S., Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865.

On July 4, 1863, James was wounded at the Battle of Helena in Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas. Per a researcher, James was transported to a Tennessee hospital by the Union Army where the wound on ankle turned to gangrene.

James died at the hospital in Tennessee on August 18, 1863. Note that it was reported that he was killed at Helena, Arkansas during the Civil War battle, but as indicated above - records report that he was taken to the hospital in Tennessee and that's where he died.

When his mother Naomi gave information for her writeup, she had some dates incorrect based on actual records, but she was pretty close in the dates and information she gave.

James was initially buried in Memphis (probably wherever they were burying the soldiers who died) but was reinterred and buried in the Memphis National Cemetery on Townes Avenue in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee (U.S., National Cemetery Interment Control Forms, 1928-1962).

*After James' death, his widow Rachel married his cousin James Harvey Wilson.
