Glenn C. Almond, 84, passed away Saturday morning, November 15, 2008 at his home in Fort Walton Beach while under hospice care. Glenn was born June 4, 1924 in Albemarle, N.C., the son of Lemuel and Dallie (Cauble) Almond.

As a young boy, he delivered newspapers and was in the Boy Scouts, earned his Eagle Scout and later became a Boy Scout Leader. Upon completion of high school, he worked for a short time in the shipyards until 1942.

He entered the United States Navy where he was a fighter pilot and served in the Pacific Theatre. Glenn was united in marriage to Virginia Kendall in Raleigh, N.C. He then attended North Carolina State University and received a degree in mechanical engineering.

From 1954 to 1974, they resided in Birmingham, Ala. In 1974, they moved to Fort Walton Beach, where Glenn started the consulting engineering firm of Humber and Almond until his retirement in 1995.

In 1993, Glenn was united in marriage to Geraldine Adams and they made their home in Fort Walton Beach where he loved to garden, cook and read.

Glenn was a member of the Baptist Church and Methodist Church in North Carolina. He was a very active member of the ASHRAE (American Society of Heating & Air Conditioning Engineers) and was the first president of the Northwest Florida Chapter. Glenn was also an active supporter and contributor to Mount Dora Children's Home in Mount Dora, Fla.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Virginia and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Almond of Fort Walton Beach; two sons, Paul (Barbara) Almond of Gulf Breeze, Fla. and Leslie Almond of Navarre, Fla.; two granddaughters, Lacey (Darren) Almond-North of Milton, Fla. and Meredith Almond of Orlando, Fla.; great-granddaughter, Aurora Almond-North of Milton, Fla.; step-daughters, Cindy (Larry) Matthews of Mary Esther, Fla. and Shirley (David) Weisman of West Harrison, Ind.; sisters, Peggy (Stan) Small of Charlotte, N.C. and Iris Waller of Albemarle, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at McLaughlin Mortuary, 17 Chestnut Ave. SE, Fort Walton Beach, with Bob Rigdon and James Moore officiating with burial to follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Glenn's memory to Mount Dora Children's Home, 301 W. 13th Avenue, Mount Dora, Fla. 32757. You may share memories and condolences at www.mclaughlinmortuary.com.
