A celebration of Life Service was held at 3:00 P. M., Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Hughes Family Home, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Interment Red Oak Cemetery, Red Oak Township, Cedar County, Iowa. Arrangement by Turner West Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel (Shorty), of 62 years, a son, Dwight Jr., daughter-in-law, Debbie and three grandchildren, Dwight Thomas (Tom), Judith Lee (Judy) and John David (John). Also surviving is a sister, Alice, in Sioux City, Iowa, and nieces and nephew, cousins and special relatives in the country of Wales, his father's birthplace.

Dwight was born October 12, 1914 to William John and Nettie Jane Hughes in Cedar Rapids. He died April 26, 2003 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Grant High School, studied horticulture at Iowa State University and was a Captain in the United States Army, serving in the European Theatre during World War II. Dwight spent his career in the landscape nursery business as co-owner of Cedar Rapids Nursery Company. He had enormous pride in the family enterprise established in 1908 and found comfort realizing four generations of Hughes provided landscape service to this religion of Eastern Iowa.

Active in city, state, regional and national nursery associations, Dwight was inducted into the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association Hall of Fame.

As a community leader, Dwight served the All Iowa Fair for over thirty years, was on the Board of the United State Bank, West Side Civic Club, American Red Cross, and active in the Junior Chamber and Chamber of Commerce of Cedar Rapids. He assisted in establishing the horticulture program at Kirkwood Community College and served Iowa State University in several capacities including the Horticulture Research Corporation. He donated to the Horticulture Gardens where the auditorium is named in his honor. For over twenty years he was on the Board of the Iowa Arboretum where he and Hazel funded an Education Center. Always a part of the Iowa State Horticulture Society, Dwight was given the Merit Award in 1960, Honor Award in 1971 and Presidential Citation in 2000.

Dwight was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and had countless friends that he cultivated for over 80 years. Many of his customers and clients became lifelong friends. A memorial fund has been established.
