CURTIS -- J. Iola Hinton, 96, formerly of Stockville and Curtis, died Tuesday (Nov. 11, 2008) at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
She was born Aug. 4, 1912, north of Dickens, to H.A. "Gus" and Nellie (Pearson) Latimer. She grew up on a farm/ ranch where the family raised Registered Hereford Cattle and she milked cows. Her mother taught in a rural school north of Dickens.
She attended Dickens High School before attending North Platte High as Dickens did not offer shorthand. She graduated in 1929. She moved to Curtis to be a nanny for Jackie Hagadorn.
On Feb. 12, 1936, she married Dale A. Hinton at the Frontier County Courthouse in Stockville with Lauren Messersmith officiating. They moved to a sod house west of Stockville and where Dale taught at North Star No. 29 for several years.
They moved their family northeast to the Hinton farm which still exists today. They farmed until December 1969, when they bought their home in Curtis and lived there until Dale died on Sept. 11, 1981. She continued living there until July 1987. She then went to live with her daughter, Nadine and husband, Harold Brown for 13 years. She then became a resident of Senior Living Choices in Curtis and Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
She was a member of the Congregational Church in Stockville where she taught Sunday school for many years, Gay 60's Club of Curtis, Stockville Women's Fellowship, Pinochle and Pitch Clubs.
She was also a volunteer at Sunset Haven Rest Home and was a "taxi driver" for her many friends who needed rides to appointments.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; one sister, Mabel Latimer; two brothers, Claude and wife, Helen Latimer and Lynn and wife, Blanche Latimer; son, Don Hinton in 1993; and son-in-law, Harold Brown in June 2008.
Survivors include her daughter, Nadine Brown of Curtis; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Curtis. Burial will take place in the Arbor Cemetery in Stockville.
Visitation is today until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m., at Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel in Curtis. Online condolences can be made at www.blasestrauser.com.
