WILBUR R. INGALLS ARCHITECT, DESIGNED MANY PUBLIC BUILDINGS

Wilbur R. Ingalls, 74, an architect who designed schools, churches and banks, died Tuesday in a Portland nursing home.

In the 38 years that Mr. Ingalls ran a successful architectural firm in Portland, he designed numerous buildings, including the Blewett Science Building and MacDougall-Ginn Hall at Westbrook College, Reiche School and Portland Arts and Technology High School, the Father Hayes Center at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Key Bank branch on Commercial Street.

Mr. Ingalls designed 60 or 70 school projects throughout Maine, said Joseph Ostwald, who worked for the firm. ''As a testament to his work, many of his clients were repeat clients.

Before he started his own firm in 1957, he worked for Alonzo J. Harriman Inc. of Auburn, and Engineering Services of Portland.

Mr. Ingalls was a member of numerous architectural associations, the Portland Kiwanis Club, the Cumberland Club and Portland Executive Club. He was on the executive board of the Pine Tree Council of Boy Scouts of America, a trustee of North Yarmouth Academy, director of Deering Savings and Loan, a past director of Opportunity Farm for Boys, and served on the Advisory Committee of the Eunice Frye Home's board. He was an active member of Woodfords Congregational Church.
