In the Matthews family, Noah Homer Matthews was the one interested in the family history, and he was the one who wrote down a simple family record of names going back to great-great-grandfather Thomas Matthews, who was supposedly from England. It's only names with a few dates, not very complete, yet Noah's family record has been a great help in tracing his particular Matthews line.

Noah Homer Matthews was the oldest son of Thomas Matthews and his second wife, Elizabeth Roe King. He spent the first part of his life in Gwinnett County, where he married Sarah Ellen Garner on 8 Sept 1870. By 1875, he owned 50 acres in the 158th District worth about $400 ( he would acquire more land in Gwinnett County, DeKalb County, and in Atlanta). By 1878, he had been appointed a Justice of the Peace and Notary Public. Around 1880 though, he moved his little family to Atlanta, where he was a bookkeeper and part-time Methodist minister.

Noah and Sarah's children were Ellen Vandora (Matthews) Glover, William Thoams Matthews, Dr. Oscar Homer Matthews, Charles Henry Matthews (died young), and James Edwin Matthews, Sr.

His death notice from the Atlanta Constitution, 21 Oct 1914:

"Noah Homer Matthews, aged 62, died Tuesday morning at 2 o'clock at his residence, 23 Highland avenue. He was one of Atlanta's oldest residents. He is survived by his widow, three sons, Dr. O. H. Matthews and J. E. Matthews of Atlanta, and W. T. Matthews of Birmingham, Ala.; one daughter, Mrs. E. V. Glover, one brother, J. T. Matthews and one sister, Mrs J. C. Bagwell."
