Clyde Bentley was the son of Bennie Dexter Bentley (1885-1950) and Bertha Victoria Daughtry (1891-1983), and husband of 1) Kathryn Aileene Strickland (1929-1998), and 2) Virginia "Ginnie" Thomas. Clyde was the eighth child of 11 children of Bennie and Bertha Bentley. He was the last of all these children to pass away. He is survived by his two sons, Don Levon Bentley, and Allan Lewis Bentley (me); three grandchildren, Nancy Gayle Bentley (daughter of Don Bentley and Judy Gail Jordon)and Daniel Bentley (son of Allan Bentley and Glenda Virginia Cassele, and Tracy Jackson Taylor (daughter of Michael Harvey Jackson and Glenda Virgina Cassele and step daughter of Allan Bentley); three great grandchildren, Claire Makensie Taylor, Jackson Taylor, and Madelyn Grace Taylor; and many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.

He attended the Bay Pole school at Bay, Colquitt County, Georgia. The school existed from 1902 to 1956. All that remains of the school is a large granite maker on the spot where it was located.

My father spent most of his childhood farming with his father. He made up his mind early that this was not the kind of life he wanted to live. When he was older, he would go to Lake Wales, Florida and work in the laundry business driving a laundry truck for his uncle and he also worked in the canning plants there.

It was while he was at home in Moultrie, Georgia helping his father bring in the crops that he met my mother, Kathryn Strickland. My father's sisters. Pauline and Lillian had been working in Lindele, Georgia in the cotton mill. It was there they met my grandmother, Oddie Strickland and her daughter, Kathryn. Oddie invited Pauline and Lillian home to visit and they all became friends.

Lillian and Pauline invited my mother and Oddie to come visit with them back home in Moultrie, Georgia. And when my father arrived from Florida he met my mother for the first time.

My mother and father were soon married on December 24, 1945 at the court house in Rome, Georgia. After their marriage they moved to Lake Wales Florida to live with the Trulucks for two weeks until they could find an apartment.

Mother and father lived in Lakes Wales for a short time and then moved back to Lindele, Georgia to work in the cotton mill. Then they moved a short distance north to Shannon, Georgia. Brighton Mills built a textile plant at Shannon and father went to work at the mill.

While my father worked at the mill he also took a correspondence course in electricity. After completing the course he became an electrical maintenance worker for the mill. After a while my father asked for a raise and did not get it. He talked with his bother-in-law, Doug Reynolds, about working at Lockheed in Marietta. He applied shortly thereafter and got the job.

After working for Lockheed for several months mother and father decided to move to Marietta to be closer to dad's work place. We moved there around 1955 when I would be 5 years old.

Dad learned a lot more about electrical work from his work at Lockheed and began a side business wiring houses for housing contractors. This came in handy due to the frequent layoffs at the Lockheed plant. During one of these layoffs, dad took a job selling electric welders and on another layoff he went to work for Hotpoint and learned to repair appliances.

Dad always went back to work for Lockheed, but it was while working there that he injured his back in a plant accident and had to leave Lockheed. He was disabled for a time and decided to learn the HVAC trade and went to the area technical school to learn the trade. He not only learned it quickly but was asked to come back and teach the course. He taught for a short time until his back was reasonably healed and then went out working in his new trade.

Dad taught my brother and I the electrical business and also taught us to work on and maintain automobiles. When he learned appliance repair and HVAC he began teaching us that trade as well.

Dad received his 50 year award from the Nelms Masonic Lodge No. 323 - Smyrna, Cobb County, Georgia March 13, 2004. He was initiated a Mason December 12, 1953 in Shannon, Floyd County, Georgia.

Dad eventually grew to the age of 84 developing Alzheimer and then had a fall after breakfast breaking his hip in four places. Due to dad's weak condition, age, and Alzheimer, the doctors decided it was too risky to operate. He was transferred from the Emory-Adventist Hospital in Smyrna to Tranquility Hospice in Austell, Georgia on Austell Rd. He passed away peacefully in the company of his loving wife Ginnie.
