JOSEPH - Earl Samuel Utley, 89, Joseph, passed away April 6, 2005, in Cedar City.

He was born Sept. 7, 1915, in Sevier, to John and Phoebe Mackay Utley. He married Ila Dunn, Sept. 14, 1935, in Richfield. The marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS temple on March 21, 1940. They have been happily married for 69 years.

Earl worked for Denver and Rio Grand Railroad for 27 years and for UDOT for 19 years. He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving many years in Scouting where he received the Silver Beaver Award and Second Miler Award. He also served as a councilor in the bishopric, bishop, high councilman, councilor in the stake presidency, Manti temple worker and various other church positions.

Earl also served as councilman for the town of Joseph for eight years, mayor of Joseph for 38 years, and spent endless hours beautifying the Joseph Cemetery, city park and the town of Joseph, which he loved. Earl was also an avid sports fan and loved watching the Jazz and BYU. He also enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Ila, Joseph; son, Roger Utley, Spanish Fork; sisters, Beverly Fredricks, Overton, Nev., and Marysvale; RaNae Utley Green, Palos Verde, Calif.

He was preceded in death by parents; brothers and sisters: Melba, John, Marvell, Lynn, Ruth, Golden "Dick" , Clark, and four brothers who died at an early age.

Funeral services were April 12, at noon, in the Joseph LDS ward in Elsinore, with Bishop Randell Obray officiating. Compassionate services were provided by the Joseph LDS ward Relief Society.

A family prayer was offered by Greg P. Utley, (nephew), and the invocation was given by Scott Reeves, (grandson-in-law).

Prelude and postlude music was performed by Veola Vaun Harrison.

Musical selections included "I Stand All Amazed," by JoDee Stott, (friend), accompanied by Ryan Stott; "O My Father," by Marion Harrison, (friend), accompanied by Veola Vaun Harrison; "I Need Thee Every Hour," by Marion Harrison, Jerry Howell, Morgan White and Larry Gay, accompanied by Veola Vaun Harrison; and "How Great Thou Art," by JoDee Stott.

A personal history was shared by Greg S. Utley, (grandson). Tributes were given by Richard Utley, (nephew), and Yvonne Leavitt, (friend). Speakers included Colby Gall, (friend), and Roger Utley, (son). Remarks were offered by Randell Obray.

The Benediction was offered by Hayven Dunn, (nephew).

Serving as pallbearers were Greg S. Utley, Kendall G. Utley, Scott Reeves, Danny Utley, Gage Utley, Mason Utley, Duncan Utley, Russell Utley, Steven Utley, Richard Utley, David Dunn, Hayven Dunn, Greg P. Utley, Bruce Utley, and Steven Alvey.

Honorary pallbearers were Lynn Parker, Dee Gay, Ivan Mills, Bud Dunn, Eric Stephens, Justin Leavitt, Colby Gall, Marion Harrison, Morgan White, Jerald Howell, June Jensen, Morris Jensen, and Lee R. Jensen.

Interment was at the Joseph City Cemetery with the dedicatory prayer given by Bud Dunn, (brother-in-law).
