Emily was born on February 7, 1935, in Fredericksburg, Va., in an old historic house her grandfather owned on U.S. Route 1. She attended James Monroe High School where she was Junior Class President, an honor student, and graduated the 1952 class Valedictorian.
Emily was a 1956 honors graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, School of Pharmacy. She was a member of Rho Chi Pharmacy Fraternity, Kappa Epsilon (national pharmacy sorority), and the Virginia Pharmac-eutical Association.
Emily was married 52 years to Colonel Gary L. Ellis. They were married in St. Georges Episcopal Church, Fredericks-burg, Va. in 1956 and Emily took her Virginia State Board Exam on her honeymoon. During her pharmacy career, Emily worked at Peoples Drug Store, Dart Drugstore, and Wal-Mart until she retired in 1995.
In 1996, Emily and Gary moved to White Stone, Va. Emily worked occasionally at the Free Clinic, She rejoined the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, Lettice Lee Chapter where she served as Treasurer. Emily was also a member of the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the DAR.
Emily is survived by her husband, Gary; two daughters and sons-in-law, Erin E. Mayer and Charles M. Mayer, of Woodbridge, Va.; and Eve L. Ellis and Commander Andrew D. Burden of Yorktown, Va.; and two granddaughters, Carly M. Mayer and Elaine E. Burden and one grandson, Carson M. Mayer.
Emily was a strong soul and touched the hearts of many. She will be missed by all. She loved all animals and requested that, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Animal Welfare League (.animalwelfareleague.com).
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 30 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, Va., followed by a reception at St. Georges Episcopal Church. Arrangements by Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, Va.
