John Donald Cline, 54, a fire truck driver and chief of the Massena Volunteer Fire Department in 1950 and 1951, died Monday morning, Oct. 3, 1966, at about 10 o'clock in Massena Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health some time but had continued to work as a fire truck driver. He was off duty last week and due to his condition, had decided to take another week. His sister Mrs. William (Ruth) Hawes, 53 Clarkson Ave., took him to the hospital Sunday night and he was admitted.
The body is at the Donaldson Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert U. Holmes, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will conduct the funeral services Thursday, with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery. The hour of the funeral will be set when the sons arrive.
One son, Major Richard T. Cline, who has been serving in Vietnam, arrived in Massena several weeks ago, en-route to Germany with his wife and family. He has been visiting his mother in Yonkers before leaving for overseas duty. He will arrive in Massena today. The other son is Gerald Cline, Raleigh, N. C.
The other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Lulu Butler Cline, 8 Highland Ave., with whom he lived; one sister, Mrs. William (Ruth) Hawes, Massena; four grandchildren. A brother, Harold Cline, died in Schenectady a few years ago.
Mr. Cline was born Mar. 22, 1912, on the Cline farm, the Cline farm just outside the village on the Maple St. Rd. His parents were Mrs. Lulu Butler Cline, Massena, and the late Charles E. Cline. He attended Massena schools,
worked for the Butternut Bakery for many years, also had bread route. He joined the fire department in 1936, served as chief in 1950 and 1951, and for about 15 years has been a full time employee of the fire department, serving as fire truck driver.
He was completely devoted to the fire department. He attended all the conventions, and always took an active part in fire prevention work. He was a loyal and conscientious village employee.
