Stephen McClure Jr. was one of eleven children born to Stephen McClure and Sarah Smith McClure.He was born in 1842 Conway County Arkansas, near Quitman Arkansas. Later Quitman became Cleburne County (1892). The old family home was just outside of Quitman near the 107 highway(now Faulkner County)and highway 25.On the 1860 census, Stephen is listed as 19 years old and single, still living at home with Dad. On July 15, 1862, Stephen enlisted in the confederate army. He was assigned to Company A of the 10th Arkansas Regiment. This Regiment was sent to Union City, Tennessee. Later on he went to Columbus Kentucky. He was in General Polks Reserve at the battle of Belmont. After that he was sent to Bowling Green Kentucky. Later on his Regiment was assigned to General Brekinridge at Corinth. He was with General Albert S. Johnston when they attacked the Fedaral Camp at Pittsburg Landing. His Regiment was reorganized after this , and he was assigned to Colonel Jesse Witt. They were ordered to defend Port Hudson in Louisana. His entire regiment was captured there and the offercers were sent to prison camps, the enlisted men were exchanged as POW. He was paroled in July 1863. Later he was with General Sterling Price during the raid in Missouri 1864. He was discharged from the Confederacy November 1864. Stephen returned to his home near Quitman and lived there until his death. In 1881 Stephen married for the 1st time. He was 39 and she was 45. He married Telitha Stanley, 1-2-1881. They had no children. On the 1900 Census Stephen is living with a neice, and is listed as 51 and a widow. Stephen applied for a civil war pension 8-10-1910 in Cleburne County, Arkansas. He was granted 50 dollars a year. Stephen died December 13, 1911 and is buried in section C grave 870.
