James was born in 1875 to Irish parents. His parents came to the Florida Mesa as farmers in the late 1880s. The Conways purchased the land which includes Florida Cemetery (then known as Hood Cemetery) from the Hamptons. The land had been a burial ground since at least 1881. When the Florida Baptist Church was build adjoining the cemetery about 1909, the Conways then deeded the cemetery to what is now the Florida Cemetery Association. The family is mentioned in the book "Pioneers of the San Juan Country."
James died in 1937.
