According to his death certificate (Ellis Co., #1631), Maynard was born in GA., the son of Maynard W. HARRIS and Martha Matilda HOLLAND. [Both his given name and that of his father are sometimes shown as "Minyard".] He had siblings Elizabeth Ann GLASS, Martha Eugenie, Margaret Elizabeth, James Francis, William Dawson, John Freeman, Robert Monroe, Thomas Jefferson, David Hill, Samuel Henry, and George Winfield HARRIS. A number of his siblings immigrated to TX after the late 1880s.

He was the widower of Tennessee Virginia KING HARRIS, whom he married in Murray Co., GA, in the 1880s. The couple wss the parents of Freeman M. (1887-1887) and Maynard B. HARRIS Jr.(died 1989).

An attorney in practice with his brother, William Dawson HARRIS in the Ft. Worth law firm of Harris and Harris, he served as a Tarrant County Judge for 2 terms beginning in 1896 and was elected Mayor of Ft. Worth as well.
