Serial Killer. Known as the Genesee River Killer. He was responsible for the murders of at least 11 women in the Rochester, NY area between 1988 and 1990. A jury took just six hours to convict him after his three month trial in 1990, helped in large part by his extremely detailed confessions which included some overwhelmingly gruesome information, and despite his claims of insanity and multiple personality disorder. He was sentenced to 250 years in prison, one of the longest sentences ever handed down in New York state. Shawcross had previously been charged in the deaths of two children in the early 1970's but struck a plea bargain in return for leading police to the bodies and was convicted on only one charge of manslaughter. He was paroled just a year before his first murder in Rochester. He was being held at the Sullivan Correctional Facility but had been transported to the Albany Medical Center where he died of apparent cardiac arrest.
