Born in Wentworth, Grafton County, N.H.; family moved to Bennington Co. Vermont in 1806; then moved to Massachusetts for 6 years; removed to Lower Canada in 1818/1819; married Permelia Bodwell in 1824; settled in Boone County, IL in 1836; held various county positions in Boone County (including treasurer, supervisor, justice of the peace, juror); was parent member of the Universalist Society of Belvidere (formed in 1853); lived in Minnesota for 2 years and represented St. Anthony in Minnesota Territory House of Representatives in 1854; returned to Belvidere and was a surveyor and charter member of Kishwaukee R.A. Masons in 1865; had a grocery that became Moulton & Darnielle (daughter married Moulton, granddaughter married Darnielle); had 4 daughters (Emeline, Jane, Permelia, Mary Ann); Gardner Street is named after him.
His daughter, Jane, married Robert Whitney Waterman, who later became governor of California.
