THE BERKSHIRE EAGLE (PITTSFIELD, MASS.) FRIDAY 18 JUNE 1982:

Anita D. Littell, widow of Digest editor
TYRINGHAM--Mrs. Anita Damrosch Littell, widow of Robert Littell, editor of the Reader's Digest, and daughter of American composer and conductor Walter Damrosch, died at her summer home on Jerusalem Road here yesterday after a long illness. She was 78.

Mrs. Littell was a granddaughter of James G. Blaine, Republican candidate for the presidency in 1884. Her mother was Margaret Blaine Damrosch.

She was born in New York City and attended Miss Spence's School. She was a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and in the 1920s played supporting roles as an actress on Broadway and on tour.

In the 1930s, Mrs. Littell and a friend formed the Burden-Littell Entertainment Bureau, which for many years arranged some of New York's most fashionable debutante parties and theater benefits. She gave up her partnership in the firm in 1950 to join her husband in Paris while he was editor in Europe for the Reader's Digest. Mr. Littell died in 1963.

Mrs. Littell had been a summer resident of Tyringham since 1936. During World War II she was active in arranging charity benefits at Tanglewood and elsewhere for such organizations as Bundles for Britain.

She lived in New York City during the winter until moving to Boston two years ago.

She had been a trustee of Hancock Shaker Village since 1965.

She leaves three sons, Blaine Littell of Cambridge, Walter Damrosch Littell of New Haven, Conn., and Philip Littell of Lenox; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Storrow of Stonington, Conn., and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Union Church in Tyringham with burial in Tyringham Cemetery. The Kelly Funeral Home in Lee is in charge of arrangements. There are no calling hours.
